This article examines how citizens engage in reason-giving during deliberation by analyzing eight National Issues Forums. While participants often provided factual evidence to support their conclusions, they frequently lacked logical and causal connections. The findings suggest that deliberative research should explore conditions that enhance effective use of evidence and how reason-giving patterns impact deliberative quality.
