This paper analyzes how users experiencing loneliness communicate on Reddit forums dedicated to loneliness (/r/Lonely) compared to non-loneliness forums, such as an advice-seeking forum (/r/AskReddit) and a depression-focused forum (/r/depression). By examining language features, the study explores differences in communication based on whether users are also part of a depression forum. Key findings include that /r/Lonely users tend to seek relationship advice in /r/AskReddit and that those who are lonely and depressed use more words related to negative emotions compared to those who are lonely but not depressed. These insights can inform targeted interventions for loneliness.
