This paper explores the practice of maternal placentophagy, the consumption of the placenta by the mother after childbirth, which has been gaining popularity since the 1970s in the global North. Despite its prevalence among other placental mammals, this practice is not documented in historical or cross-cultural contexts outside of recent times. The paper provides an in-depth qualitative analysis of the reasons behind the growing popularity of placentophagy and examines how it is incorporated into narratives about "ideal" natural and medical births.
