Community consultation in Australia has become institutionalized but often fails to effectively engage communities, leading to increased cynicism and diminished trust. As deliberative democracy gains traction, some traditional consultation methods are being superficially adapted to appear deliberative without genuine inclusion or engagement. To reverse civic disengagement, a fundamental shift is needed in policymaking practices. This involves innovating to enhance inclusiveness, deliberation, and influence in community consultation processes.
