Parents of children with special needs are at higher risk for stress and exhaustion, and occupational therapy interventions, while beneficial, can be demanding on families. This study explores ways to provide occupational therapy services that enhance family capacities without causing additional strain. Through qualitative research involving online community forums with 41 parents and occupational therapists in Quebec, nine key principles were identified. These include being mindful of potential negative impacts, avoiding information overload, taking sufficient time, focusing on positives, and offering flexible service conditions. The findings aim to guide the development of capacity-building rehabilitation services that optimize positive outcomes while minimizing burdens on families.
