This paper explores two underutilized methods for online gaming research: data collection from online forums and solicited online diary blogs. It examines the advantages, such as ease of access, rich textual data, anonymity, and participant convenience, as well as the disadvantages, including lack of contextual information, sampling bias, and generalizability issues. By discussing methodological and ethical considerations, the paper aims to provide guidance for researchers in gaming studies and emphasizes that these methods can offer unique insights not available through other data collection techniques.
