Public Internet discussion forums offer authentic opportunities for foreign language practice and intercultural competence development, yet are underutilized by language educators. This paper explores the pedagogical potential of these forums, examining cultural differences and proposing guidelines for effective participation. Case studies highlight the skills needed for learners to engage autonomously in cross-cultural interactions beyond traditional student roles.
