This paper connects the debates on the individualisation and mediatisation of religion with transformations in religious authority online. It integrates classical and contemporary theories of religious individualisation with Campbell’s model of four layers of religious authority on the Internet. The study analyzes German Christian and Polish Catholic Internet forums to explore transnational similarities in individualisation trends and the role of textual religious authorities. The findings indicate that while forums support independent and reflexive approaches to religion, significant critique of religious institutions often originates offline. Forums do not typically possess subversive potential but facilitate a more informed engagement with religion.
