This article examines the potential end of neoliberal hegemony in economy and society, focusing on whether people are imagining a future within environmental limits and beyond the growth imperative. Theoretically, the study builds on Marx and Bourdieu to analyze the ideological impact of capitalism and neoliberalism on our perceptions of the environment and society. Empirically, it analyzes qualitative data from eleven deliberative citizen forums on needs satisfaction conducted in Sweden in 2020. The results indicate a weakening of capitalist and neoliberal ideologies, particularly in discussions about space use, labor market inequalities, societal norms on upward mobility, and individual ideas about career and happiness. The forums revealed significant overlap between researchers' eco-social policy recommendations for transformational change and citizens' views on necessary measures. Deliberative citizen forums offer opportunities for critical reflection and imagining sustainable ways to meet human needs, playing a crucial role in challenging neoliberalism and developing postgrowth economies and societies.
