This article develops a theoretical framework to analyze the interplay between reason-giving and storytelling in political discussions, focusing on both institutionally organized forums and informal settings. It challenges the notion of a one-size-fits-all approach to deliberation quality, proposing a framework to evaluate how these practices vary across different levels of deliberation quality (high, low, or changing). The study uses data from discussions on reducing the criminal responsibility age in Brazil, analyzing how reasons and stories are structured and function in both optimal and suboptimal deliberative contexts. The findings highlight variations in how these elements contribute to the quality of deliberation and offer insights into the pragmatic dimensions of political communication.
