This research investigates the opioid-sparing effects of cannabis by analyzing posts from two large Reddit communities: one for active opioid users and one for those in recovery. From December 2015 to August 2019, cannabis-related posts were examined using term-frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) weighting and qualitative content analysis. Cannabis mentions were twice as common in the recovery subreddit compared to the active opioid use subreddit. In the recovery subreddit, cannabis was often discussed as a treatment for managing opioid withdrawal symptoms, while in the active opioid use subreddit, it was mentioned for enhancing the opioid high. The study highlights the need for future research on cannabis's role in managing opioid withdrawal symptoms.
