This paper addresses the ongoing discussion in tertiary education about the effective use of discussion forums for knowledge sharing and active learner interaction. Despite their widespread use, ensuring qualitative participation remains a challenge. The paper presents a conceptual model for evaluating the quality of participation in online discussion forums, based on a comprehensive review of existing literature. The proposed framework aims to assist facilitators in assessing learners' online contributions and helps students understand the expectations for their participation in online forums.
