This paper investigates the use of a Q&A forum in a CS1 course, focusing on student participation behaviors and opinions. The study finds that while a small group of students is highly engaged, most students do not actively read or post on the forum. Factors contributing to low engagement include fear of inadequate knowledge and concerns about visibility and repercussions within the student community. The paper analyzes forum data and survey responses from students to explore these behaviors and barriers to active participation.
