This study examines individual motives and structural mechanisms influencing message selection in online political discussions. Analyzing behavioral data and survey responses with a temporal exponential random graph model (TERGM), the research finds that message selection is primarily driven by shared evaluative criteria and structural factors within the discussion network, rather than overt partisan preferences.
