In large-scale online courses, the volume of posts can hinder effective learning due to poor organization and delayed feedback. This article addresses these issues by proposing principles for designing online scaffolding to improve learning outcomes. An automatic feedback scaffolding was developed based on these principles and integrated into the Learning Cell Knowledge Community. It provided timely feedback, guidance, and better organization through tagging. The results demonstrated that this scaffolding positively impacted learners’ knowledge construction, engagement, and course completion rates. The principles outlined can inform future scaffolding designs and practices.
