Islamic renewal in Southeast Asia has prompted scholarly examination of forums such as pengajian in Indonesia, where Muslim women express devotion. Contrary to the assumption that these forums reinforce the state's domestication of women as housewives, fieldwork from central Java in the 1980s reveals urban women's reading groups engaging in 'resistant reading' through vernacular commentary on Qur'anic verses, providing an ethnographic critique of this notion.
