Nomad
On one of my forums, I approve accounts manually. I am doing this to control spammers. I have also been on a couple of forums where the admin approved accounts manually. However, I do not think this method can be effective to control spam because the registration details do not give any information on the intention of new user. Do you also manually approve accounts? JoelR
This is one of my biggest pet peeves as a new user. If I have to wait more than 3 to 5 minutes to get my account approved, I'm probably never coming back.
Dilip
I agree with @JoelR But I have faced this situation once. It did hurt my hunt for new users.
Kane
If you are manually approving account and if you or your staff are not there to take action immediately, I do not think people have patience to wait for account approval. While trying to control spammer, you will also lose genuine users
Dilip
It is true. Keeping them waiting is a bad idea.
Nomad
Manual Approval of account will chase away genuine users, but with this tactics you can also control spammers in some way. For instance you can reject accounts using unusual email domains.
Live Games
I manually approve users in my forum for different reason. I do it in order to prevent users from re-joining the forum after they get banned. Each registered user is inspected by the Third-Party App before I approve him. I don't see the problem with them waiting, as they get an email when they approve. Then they return. Shortie
When I started creating my forums and communities, I made a mistake in the beginning, not even realizing that some people were not happy to wait for as long as it took me to approve their accounts. Over the years I have learned it is better to have spam prevention in place and allow members to activate their accounts through their email rather than have their accounts manually approved by yourself. I now get frustrated when I see this on forums and usually don't always come back if it takes any longer than about 10 minutes. Quote Revillution ~ Your Portal To Entertainment! Toni
Manual approval as much as it can be frustrating to deal with, often is used by community owners because of the influx of spam accounts that find a way through spam prevention. I have used manual approval in the past due to spam prevention not catching all spammers and it does help.
