Background
Do you have dozens and dozens of similar member groups? Do you have groups that are highly repetitive, such as monthly classes or weekly cohorts?
Clubs can be a unique and creative way to segment your members without building new groups for each set of users. IPS hardcoded a maximum limit of 50 secondary groups per user, and clubs can be an easier method for you to give users access to unique forum boards and unique files without creating a new group.
What are Clubs?
Clubs was announced in 2017 as a new feature for Invision Community. They are designed to be a micro-community where a set of users can access to their own forum boards, files, blogs, gallery albums, and more. Each club has its own leadership structure with a Leader and Moderator.
Some things to think about when using clubs as an extension to groups:
- There is no automatic promotion into / out of a club like a group. All club joins are manually done either by the user, or by the club Leader.
- Each club can offer its own unique set of documents (eg. forum discussions, files, blogs, calendar, etc)
- Clubs are perfect for repetitive groups of users (eg. monthly classes, weekly sessions)
- Users can be a member of one or more clubs (eg. they enroll in multiple classes or sessions )
- Users can lead multiple clubs (eg. you can have 1 user who is the Club Leader for all clubs with different assistants as Club Moderators)
Before You Begin
Be sure that you can login to your ACP.
It's recommended that any work that you do in the ACP be on Desktop.
Check that groups have permission to create a club. In the group, go to Social tab > Can create clubs?
- Note: If you don't want to give permissions to a broad set of users to create clubs, one approach is to only let Administrators or Moderators have permission to create clubs. Then once the club is created, manually change the Club Owner or Club Leader to whoever you want. This means that a user, who is part of a regular group, can still end up ultimately being the Club Leader without initially starting the club.
Steps
- In the ACP, navigate to Community > Clubs. Click [Enable] if needed
- On the front-end of your community, a user with the appropriate group permission can [Start a Club].
- Remember to also add Clubs to your navigation.
