Prefixes and Tags

When I moved to IPS about a year ago I did not give Prefixes and Tags a lot of thought. I guess I do not understand what I am missing. Any wisdom?

FYI - I understand what they do but do not see the great value especially if the users are setting the tags.

Open tags can become a hot mess very quickly.  

Closed tags, which you define in advance and can offer per category, can make a lot of sense.  It's an easy way to provide another level of organization within your forum boards.

I've had open tags for over 20 years - and very few people bother to add them, or even have a clue what they are. All our static content however is tagged, sometimes in multiple categories, e.g. location, type of thing etc. That is very useful.
