This study explores how the type of online community (communities of interest vs. communities of practice) influences the effectiveness of various incentives on knowledge sharing among members. Through a meta-analysis of 24 papers focused on knowledge sharing incentives, findings reveal that community type significantly moderates the impact of trust, commitment, task enjoyment, and reciprocity on the willingness of members to share knowledge. The research underscores the importance of considering the specific context of the online community when designing strategies to encourage knowledge sharing, suggesting that what motivates members to share in one community type might not have the same effect in another.
