This research explores knowledge sharing behavior in online communities through the adaptation of the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TpB) from Social Psychology. Findings from a web survey of 158 group members and observation of interactions in eight active groups of professional educators suggest that normative pressures and knowledge sharing self-efficacy significantly influence intention to share knowledge. However, attitude and controllability have less impact. Qualitative analysis of online interactions reveals implicit factors motivating engagement, including normative beliefs, control beliefs, and behavioral beliefs related to outcome expectations.
