In “Motivation and barriers to participation in virtual knowledge sharing in communities of practice,” Ardichvilli, Page, and Wentling explore the motivations and barriers to virtual knowledge sharing in online communities of practice (CoPs). Through interviews with 23 participants from 16 organizations, the authors find that the three most common motivators for participation are the perceived usefulness of the knowledge, the desire for professional growth, and the expectation of reciprocity. The most common barriers are time constraints, concerns about intellectual property, and the absence of incentives. The authors conclude that CoP facilitators should focus on creating a supportive environment to encourage participation, provide mechanisms for managing intellectual property, and develop incentives for participation.
