This paper examines the impact of online communities on users' personal identity construction, viewing, and definition by exploring two philosophical problems: the Characterization Question and the Self-Other Relations Question. It reinterprets these problems within the context of online communities using an externalist and cognitive perspective, describing these communities as virtual cognitive niches. The paper supports the Attachment Theory of Identity, which posits a continuity between offline and online identities, with the latter often altering the former. It concludes by discussing the importance of self-reflection in online environments, considering the effects of the Filter Bubble and the condition of Bad Faith.
