This study investigates the dynamics of participant engagement within online communities through a longitudinal analysis of 6,172 messages across 8 Usenet newsgroups. It found that 27% of posts received no response, with the likelihood of receiving a reply influenced by the information context, the poster's prior engagement, and the content of their posts. Newcomers were less likely to receive replies, while posts that were on-topic, included autobiographical introductions, posed questions, and used simpler language had higher response rates. These findings offer insights for developers on how to enhance interaction success in online communities.
