This paper explores the challenges magazine websites face with "trolling" and negative online behavior, which range from subtle provocations to outright abuse. Despite efforts to foster vibrant online communities with substantial user-generated content, the rapid development of site-building technologies has not been matched by advancements in community management strategies, leaving some publishers overwhelmed by the behaviors within their created communities. Through interviews with online editors from prominent publishing houses, this study delves into the reasons behind trolling and the strategies digital editors employ to cultivate positive interactions within their "walled gardens." It suggests that the evolution of Web 2.0 and widespread broadband access, while initially complicating community management, may ultimately empower more positive community engagement by facilitating broader participation from "ordinary" citizens.
