This paper discusses the implementation of gamification strategies in an online community designed to support Australian welfare recipients during their transition between payments. The authors developed a formal gamification model and adapted it to meet the specific constraints of their project with the Department of Human Services. Although the effectiveness of gamification in enhancing user engagement couldn't be definitively assessed due to the lack of a controlled experiment, the introduction of badges as a gamification element provided valuable insights into community life and member needs, suggesting potential benefits for community engagement and management.
