This paper discusses the transformation in how communities are informed, with online community sites now replacing traditional methods like libraries and publishing. It highlights the current state of online communities as isolated entities and explores the potential of ontologies and Semantic Web technologies to enhance these communities. The paper introduces the SIOC (Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities) ontology, which integrates existing vocabularies with new terms to describe the relationships between various concepts in online communities. This approach aims to provide more complex services by fusing information and inferring links between different applications and types of information, thereby enhancing the value of information available on the Internet.
