Two laboratory experiments investigated the perception of different member profiles in online communities and their impact on audience orientation. In common-bond communities, satisfaction with off-topic profiles was similar to on-topic ones, whereas in common-identity communities, off-topic profiles were less satisfying. Additionally, common-bond communities valued profiles more, while common-identity communities devalued off-topic profiles. Off-topic profiles in common-identity communities reduced group members' reflection on group importance and self-presentation goals, diminishing orientation towards the group.
