The study challenges traditional views of trolling as isolated acts of defiance by antagonistic individuals, identifying key issues such as vague definitions and the overlap with other anti-social behaviors. Adopting a practice-based theoretical approach, the research views trolling as behaviors that emerge within social practices, conducting an exploratory study through online archival research and interviews. It proposes trolling as comprising three social practices: learning, assimilating, and transgressing, highlighting its potential dual impact—both pro-social and anti-social—on online communities.
