This paper examines the disparities between the expectations of potential users of online community technologies and the actual offerings of lightweight platforms. Through an analysis of responses from an academic community, coupled with a semiotic inspection of three popular applications, three key factors influencing this gap are identified: technological limitations, design flaws, and the necessity for structured governance in online groups, reflecting underlying social-technical challenges.
