This paper introduces a framework designed to monitor linguistic change within online communities, revealing how individual members adapt to evolving interactional norms. Analyzing two large online communities, the study identifies a two-stage lifecycle in user engagement with linguistic change: an initial phase of linguistic innovation, where users adopt the community's language, followed by a conservative phase, where they resist further changes and become detached from new community norms. This framework not only aids in predicting a user's long-term engagement in the community but also offers insights into the development of linguistic norms and the relationship between individual and community-level linguistic evolution.
