This qualitative study explores the factors that motivate and inhibit student engagement in online discussions via Moodle and Facebook, based on interviews with 14 pre-service teachers. Employing Activity Theory, the research identifies technical tools, subjective perceptions, discussion goals, social presence, participation rules, and participant roles as key influences on online engagement. The findings offer valuable insights for educators and software designers on enhancing online discussion participation and creating a more effective web-based learning environment.
