This study investigates the dynamics of online communities across seven large platforms, uncovering a relationship between community size and activity levels. It identifies three distinct activity regimes: low-activity, and two high-activity phases. A significant finding is the existence of a sharp activity phase transition at a critical size, suggesting this point as crucial for the emergence of sustainable interactive communities. Beyond this critical size, communities enter a second high-activity regime until reaching a saturation point where activity stabilizes. This pattern is consistent across most platforms studied, with variations in the transition's steepness. The research proposes that these dynamics are influenced by the branching nature of online interactions.
