This study investigates the impact of content moderation policies on online communities using a theoretical model. The model considers how platforms choose moderation policies and how individuals decide to participate based on their preferences. Contrary to intuition, the study demonstrates that moderation policies can increase participation and diversify content available on platforms. The analysis explores various phenomena related to content moderation, including the effectiveness of different policies, resource limitations, personalization levels, and platform competition. Overall, the model offers a mathematically tractable framework for analyzing platform decisions regarding content moderation.
