This article examines learning dynamics within inter-organizational online communities, particularly how diverse and often conflicting knowledge claims among participants can paradoxically foster mutual learning. By conducting an inductive qualitative case study of two development aid communities, the research uncovers that heterogeneity in these communities not only presents challenges in terms of conflicting expertise and values but also enhances the potential for mutual learning compared to more homogeneous groups. The study contributes to knowledge management literature by illustrating how negotiation of knowledge claims can facilitate learning, offering practical insights for managing knowledge-intensive organizations and highlighting the social benefits of inclusivity in decision-making processes.
