This article examines the challenge of enabling meaningful user participation in the governance of online communities. It leverages Albert O. Hirschman's concepts of "exit" and "voice" to introduce a distinction between "effective voice" and "affective voice" within these digital spaces. Effective voice represents a type of participation where individual or collective inputs can lead to tangible changes within the community, based on clear and transparent processes. The piece argues for the exploration and implementation of mechanisms that promote authority, accountability, collective action, and community evolution by platform developers and researchers, aiming to enhance the impact of user contributions on the governance of online platforms.
