This article presents a method to harness the innovative potential of online communities for new product development through a concept called Community-Based Innovation (CBI). Based on social exchange and interaction theory, CBI was explored and refined across business projects in the consumer goods sector. The authors provide a practical guideline for CBI, delineating four systematic steps illustrated by a case study in the automotive industry. This study offers insights into the practical applications and processes of CBI.
