This study investigates the role of online communities in the Web 2.0 environment, emphasizing the importance of social capital as a motivator and reward for participants. Focusing on Slashdot, a popular website with a reputation system called 'Karma' and user-declared relationships, the study explores how network structures influence social capital generation. Findings suggest that users with lower Karma levels develop deeper networks, indicating the significance of closure, while participation intensity enhances returns. The study concludes with suggestions for mechanism design to optimize social networks and potentially increase opportunities for monetization.
