This study investigates the effectiveness of monetary and normative incentives in enhancing member participation within online communities. It reveals that while monetary incentives can boost both active and passive members' short-term participation, they may reduce the motivation of previously active members over time. On the other hand, normative pleas are found to be effective in increasing the intentions of active members to post messages in the short term. The findings offer insights for community managers on the strategic use of incentives to foster member engagement.
