This study explores the use of Twitter hashtags such as #distractinglySexy, #iLookLikeAnEngineer, and #girlsWithToys in addressing sexism within the sciences. Through a survey of 83 participants who read or used these hashtags, the research investigates the reasons for engagement and its impact. Findings reveal that the hashtags function as ad hoc online communities, providing social support and raising awareness. The study examines the role of hashtags in fostering online communities on Twitter and their effects on participants.
