This paper explores the impact of online social networking platforms on the professional development of teachers in Australia, considering the vast geographic spread and proximity to Asian cultures. Utilizing the framework of Communities of Practice (CoP), two case studies from an Australian university are examined: one aimed at pre-service teachers to combat geographic isolation and another for in-service teachers to engage with Asian languages and cultures. While the latter project was successful, the former failed due to technical, behavioral, and organizational shortcomings. Opportunities, challenges, and outcomes of both projects are analyzed, offering recommendations for similar endeavors.
