Hoschka's (1998) paper, "CSCW research at GMD-FIT: from basic groupware to the social Web," provides an early look at the social web, as it existed in the late 1990s. The paper discusses some of the early research in computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW), which laid the foundation for many of the social technologies that we use today. The author suggests that the social web represents a natural evolution of CSCW, and that many of the same principles apply to both areas of research.
