The study explores how personality traits influence knowledge sharing within Wikipedia, a virtual open content community, through the lens of diffusion theory and social value orientation. It examines the direct effects of personality traits and the moderating role of intrinsic motivations on knowledge sharing. Data from 256 active Wikipedia users on their personality, motivation, and knowledge sharing activities support the association of Wikipedia authorship with trendsetting and a prosocial value orientation. Additionally, the study finds that the impact of a prosocial value orientation on knowledge sharing is moderated by individual motivational differences, although no significant differences were found concerning opinion leadership.
