This study explores the unique challenges faced by moderators in voice-based online communities, specifically through 25 interviews with Discord moderators. It reveals that the affordances of voice communication introduce new rule-breaking behaviors (e.g., disruptive noise, voice raiding) and complicate evidence gathering due to the ephemeral nature of real-time voice interactions. The research highlights the limitations of current moderation strategies in these settings, including reliance on hearsay and first impressions, leading to issues like ineffective moderation and false accusations. The paper concludes with suggestions for platform designers and administrators on how to better support moderation in voice-based environments.
