Joinson (2001) investigated the role of self-awareness and visual anonymity in self-disclosure in computer-mediated communication. The author found that people were more likely to disclose personal information in online interactions when they felt that their identity was concealed and when they were more self-aware. This finding suggests that online communities can provide a platform for people to express themselves and connect with others in ways that might not be possible in face-to-face interactions.
