Leimeister et al. (2009) investigate the use of crowdsourcing in IT-based ideas competitions. They propose a framework for designing crowdsourcing competitions and suggest that certain "activation-supporting" components can increase the participation and quality of contributions. The authors conclude that crowdsourcing can be an effective tool for generating new ideas and promoting innovation.
