Li, Mithas, Zhang, and Tam (2019) explored the relationship between algorithmic filtering and attention inequality on social media by analyzing the data from Weibo, a popular Chinese social media platform. The study found that algorithmic filtering could increase attention inequality by sorting and ranking posts according to their popularity and relevance. The research highlighted the importance of designing effective algorithms that could balance the need to promote popular content and at the same time support diverse and novel content creation.
