This qualitative study investigates the impact of Chinese cultural factors on knowledge sharing behaviors within virtual communities of practice at a large U.S.-based multinational corporation. Through interviews with employees in China and managers of knowledge-sharing initiatives, the findings indicate that national cultural influences on online knowledge sharing may be less significant than previously thought. Key cultural barriers identified include in-group vs. out-group distinctions and modesty requirements, but concerns about saving face and hierarchical sensitivities were less impactful than anticipated. Contrary to expectations for a collectivistic culture, competitiveness and job security concerns among Chinese employees were found to significantly contribute to knowledge hoarding, suggesting that these factors, along with the distinct nature of online environments and the company's organizational culture, may dilute traditional cultural tendencies.
