This systematic literature review critically examines the empirical studies on online community participation, highlighting the need for a more nuanced understanding of user engagement beyond the simple active-passive dichotomy. Despite extensive research, a clear theoretical and conceptual framework for user participation is lacking, with most studies focusing primarily on the quantity of participation. The review calls for a deeper exploration of the complexity of online participation and its methodological implications for future research.
