This study investigates the effects of offline meetings among members of online communities on their subsequent online participation. Focusing on Everything2.com, the research utilizes content analysis, qualitative interviews, and quantitative data analysis to explore this dynamic. Contrary to what one might expect, findings suggest that while offline interactions do strengthen personal relationships among members, they paradoxically lead to a decrease in online participation, as defined by content contribution. This counterintuitive result indicates that the strengthened offline bonds may reduce the need or motivation for online interaction, posing challenges for the sustainability of the community's online engagement.
